Holocaust Remembrance Day History

According to historical records, the first Holocaust Remembrance Day took place in Israel on December 28, 1949, after a decision of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel that an annual memorial should take place on the Tenth of Tevet, a traditional day of mourning and fasting in the Hebrew calendar. This day was marked by the burial in a Jerusalem cemetery of ashes and bones of thousands of Jews brought from the Flossenbürg concentration camp and religious ceremonies held in honour of the victims.

A radio program on the Holocaust was broadcast that evening. The following year, in December 1950, the Rabbinate, organizations of former European Jewish communities and the Israel Defense Forces held memorial ceremonies around the country.

Holocaust Remembrance Day Significance

In Hebrew, Holocaust Remembrance Day is called Yom Hashoah. It is held on the 27th of Nisan unless the 27th would be adjacent to the Jewish Sabbath, in which case the date is shifted by a day. While the date of Yom Hashoah falls on a Friday, Israel observes Yom Hashoah on the preceding Thursday.

On this day, various events are held to pay tribute to the lost lives in mass shootings during the Holocaust. Memorial services, candle lighting are common events held on this day. In Israel, a siren sounds across the country, and people stop everything for two minutes of silence.
